Although unable to attend Friday, Michael was scheduled to be in race control for the weekend. With this being the first significant circuit racing event for a couple of months there was an influx of volunteers and Michael quickly realised that he was surplus to requirements.
Instead of working in race control, Michael instead took a couple of new volunteers and showed them all the different roles that happen at a race event. Both of the new volunteers had a chance to wave a green flag and a chequered flag at start finish; they helped get the cars in order at pre-grid/marshalling; waved yellow and blue flags at a flag point and also had to handle a safety car period and a red flag; they had a tour of the medical centre, medical vehicles and fire/rescue vehicles; checked out what was happening at scrutineering; talked to the judicial team and the stewards, as well as the driv ing standards advisor; and even had a chance to assist the timing team during a race.
With the feedback from the two volunteers and those who interacted with them Michael is now trying to work out how to formalise this process for new circuit officials.
