Phillip Island Auto Racing Club was formed in 1952 to purchase the land that is currently used for the racing circuit. The club developed the circuit and in 1956 the first race was held. After damage to the track during the 1962 Armstrong 500 the property was put up for sale and purchased with an agreement that the club could continue to operate the circuit and race meetings. The circuit was reopened in 1967. With the passing of Len Lukey in 1978, the operational agreement ended.
Since 1978, PIARC has continued to run events at both Phillip Island and also other venues. As well as organising race events, PIARC has an extensive introduction to motorsport officiating program to help interested people get involved in motorsport.
