With plans to attend the Adelaide 500 later in the year, Michael signed-up for Fire/Rescue at the Sandown 500.
The 3 days of the event were spent in pit lane with the Friday spent around the middle of the lane, and the Saturday and Sunday near pit exit. The split start/finish line used at Sandown meant that the pit lane fire crew had to walk to the start line for each race and then return to the pit lane for the balance of the race.
On the Sunday, during the Supercars race a vehicle from the garages Michael was monitoring was involved in an incident on track and this resulted in Michael being tasked to monitor the car from the garage entry; whilst performing this task the team’s other car stopped for a pit stop and Michael got to experience just how loud the Supercars pit stops are.
